is an icon of American history.
Her determination to stand for the ideals of American Democracy prompted her to remain seated on a
bus in Montgomery, Alabama. That action sparked the Civil Rights Movement shepherded by
the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rosa Parks lived in Detroit for a number of years until
her death, Oct. 24, 2005. She continues to inspire others to work toward liberty and justice for
all beyond her death.
The Rosa Parks Legacy Project is an ongoing endeavor by
the Metropolitan Christian Council: Detroit-Windsor. Its purpose is to call people of all
faiths to live the legacy of Rosa Parks so that every woman, man and child will:
1) embrace their God-given dignity and equality;
2) affirm that dignity and equality for all and
3) contribute in their own way to the greater good of
the community.
“Living the Rosa Parks Legacy” is the theme for the
first observance of Rosa Park’s life and legacy to take place on Sunday, October 11, 2009, from 3
p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. It will be a
commemoration, a celebration and an invitation to serve others in her memory. Young people will have the
opportunity to submit their description of Ms. Parks’ legacy for judging. The winning essay will
be read by the student as part of the program. A portion of the proceeds will establish a rose
garden in a public space and lay a cast of her footprint to call people to “walk the talk” just as
she did. Proceeds will also support the ecumenical and community outreach of the Council.
The Metropolitan Christian Council: Detroit-Windsor is a
501c3 non-profit organization headquartered at Hannan House, 4750 Woodward Avenue,
